Orange River Rafting Adventure of a lifetime in South Africa!

Orange River Rafting is definitely something for the more adventurous at heart! Experience the thrill of this Orange river rafting experience through a desert South African Style. Our river guides love to raft. They also love to share their passion with our clients. Their commitment and enthusiasm has been a vital in the creation of fun-packed, mind blowing river rafting experiences. This tour is perfect for entry level rafters and encompasses an overall adventure experience from rafting on fun filled rapids, hiking, the remoteness of the Richtersveld Desert and falling asleep under millions of African stars.

Situated close to Namibia, this 5 day tour is an adventure you have to do while in South Africa. And if you think you are just going to kick back in the back of the raft and drink beer you have another think coming. We need to cover nearly 80km of distance on a semi-inflatable river raft, so best you get work on those bulging paddling biceps before you get there. Having said that, it’s not that bad. The river flows pretty quickly so the exertion level isn’t too bad. And the beer will be cold when you arrive at camp.

Let us indulge your senses on the banks of the mighty Orange River, South Africa’s largest river. Its humble beginnings are born on the escarpment of the Drakensberg Mountains as a small trickle near Mont-aux-Sources. A lengthy 2340km west it proudly presents itself on its final exodus to the Atlantic Ocean at a point called Oranjemund. (Mouth of the Orange in Dutch).

What to expect on the Orange River Rafting tour

Besides a mind blowing cultural and adventure experience, travelers will be indulged in delectable home cooked (or in this case, river bank cooked) meals, raging camp fires on the banks of the river, qualified river guides who will not only share a story or two about their river rafting experiences but will walk away good friends. And all of this in the remote Richtersveld desert where wildness and rugged mountains are your home for 4 days. All of the food and camping equipment is paddled to each daily camp by our ‘river porters’ so you don’t need to worry about paddling a heavy raft. Rafting starts early in the morning. At lunch time we chill out siesta style for lunch and to take in the tranquil desert environment. The afternoons are kept aside for some hiking in the mountains alongside the Orange River.

Ever had a meal prepared on an open fire in the desert?

Well that’s our modus operandi on our rafting tours. Scrumptious homemade food made fresh every day. And no we don’t serve rattlesnake. We prefer a more local cuisine like elephant. Ok, we take that back. We love our elephants. Beer bread, local South African potjies ( stews) and fire cooked vegetables are more our scene.

The best thing about rafting in a desert?

It’s obvious!! The incredible weather. The lack of rainfall guarantees beautiful sunny days where you can not only get a bit of exercise while we crack the whip over you to make you paddle faster, but you can also work on that long overdue tan. The Richterveld is wild and remote. This means there are no designated campsites. We basically set up camp wherever we want.

Safety on the river

All of our guides have are qualified through the APA, African Paddling Association and have years of experience on various rapids throughout South Africa. The rafts are of the best quality available and will ensure not only a safe paddling experience but comfort as well. Life vests are provided.
