Experience Soweto from the seat of a smokin’ cool bicycle-South African style

Are you looking for a day tour from Johannesburg that includes culture,  history, and exercise?

Then we have to tour for you. Join us on this ‘no window, no doors and no blisters’  cycle tour of the iconic township known as Soweto. Our homegrown Soweto cycling guides will take you on an epic tour to some of the famous landmarks that include Nelson Mandela’s house, the Hector Pieterson Memorial and the Orlando Towers.

The tour will cover a lot of the various suburbs of Soweto where you will get to see how people live in this vibrant township. The guide will take you through the history of Soweto. Learn how apartheid and the discovery of gold helped mold the heart and soul of this iconic township.

How long is the cycle tour and what distances are covered?

The township of Soweto covers a total area of 200 square kilometers. But don’t worry. We don’t expect travelers to cover the whole area. Unless your name is Lance and have a strong arm. In that case,  we change the experience to the ’Tour de Soweto’ and hand out shiny trophies to the winners.

Back to the program.  The cycle tour through Soweto lasts about 4 hours. We cover between 10 and 15km. Easy Peasy. And of course, it is not all cycling. We make regular stops at the various points of interest where our guide will tell you stories of the struggle against Apartheid, introduce you to the locals, visit South Africa’s iconic landmarks and enjoy a traditional Soweto lunch.

What does the cycling tour include?

The tour includes the hotel pick up, a 4-hour cycling tour with a local guide, a traditional Soweto lunch and all entrance fees into the various points of attraction. So all you need is your camera and your legs. And oh yes, being a cycling tour of Soweto, the rental of the bicycle are also included. The tyres with air in them are also included. We are just too kind hey?

When do the tours operate?

The tours operate every day. Well, not every day. If we are experiencing massive thunderstorms or an alien invasion we may have to cancel. But generally, it is safe to say we operate 90% of the time. Our pick up time is 8 am daily from any hotel, Airbnb or guest house within the Johannesburg area. We should have you back at your hotel again by say 2 pm.

Is it safe?

It is 100% safe. Soweto is a vibrant and chilled out township with a wealth of history and culture. The routes we follow are safe. Like every town in the world, there are spots that should be avoided. And that we shall willingly do. Unless of course, you need your mother in law to go missing. We can organize a slight ‘detour’ if you know what we mean.
