So you are conservationist at heart and have an immense craving for wildlife, ecosystems and how all of the intricate facets of nature are intertwined into one magical web of wonder and intrigue. But …..you are not looking for the conventional wildlife safari that involves hours of sitting in a game vehicle.
What you seek is more of an interactive and ‘hands-on’ educational course where you get to experience the life of a South African field guide. As nice as the luxury safari lodges are, the wildlife courses are packed with mind blowing experiences that no lodge can ever offer. You will be a participant in interactive experiences in one of the prime wildlife areas of South Africa.

The location?
The courses are done at the Moholoholo Private reserve which is situated at the base of the Lowveld Drakensberg Mountain range. It is about 60km from the Orpen Gate of the Kruger Park. This incredible reserve has been the forerunners in wildlife conservation for over 20 years.
What are the courses all about?
The courses are designed to benefit both the enthusiastic observer as well as the serious conservationist looking to further their expertise. While on course you might get the opportunity to trial some of Africa’s Big Five like Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard. Sleep-out under the African stars are a big highlight of the course, but be warned – sleeping usually isn’t much of a priority…
Let the experts lead the way
The courses are facilitated by Colin Patrick. He is an accredited FGASA trainer and assessor. You will battle to find a more qualified and experienced field guide. Colin has over 20 years’ experience and has attained the status of “scout” (one of the top wildlife qualifications in South Africa) and is also a senior tracker and external evaluator in the conservation arena. Colin also heads up the Moholoholo team of field guides.
Where do you stay o this 7 Day Conservation Course in Moholoholo?
Although you are going to be spending a lot of time in the bush, we are not going to make you sleep under a tree at the mercy of hungry lions. You will be staying in comfortable thatched chalets that have been equipped with ensuite bathrooms consisting of a shower, toilet, wash basin and maybe a few friendly geckos to keep you company.

The 7 day Track and Sign Course

- Principles of track and sign identification
- The role of tracking
- Introduction to the trailing of the Big 5
- Tracking for scientific purposes
- Using Cyber Tracking as information gathering tool
- Tracking and signs identification for small, large animals as well as reptiles and birds
- Determining the age of tracks
- Aerial tracking
- Study of animal feeding signs
- Close up study of animal behavior at the Moholoholo rehabilitation Centre.
