One Day Rock Climbing Adventures in Johannesburg, South Africa
It’s not the mountain you conquer, it’s yourself-Edmund Hillary.
Discover the mind-blowing vertical world of rock climbing!! And just as the famous mountaineer, Edmund Hillary stated, you are going to have the chance to conquer yourself. Our rock climbing day tour gives you the opportunity to learn this adrenaline packed sport in some pretty awesome settings. Depending on your level of experience, we have routes and grades to suite all your climbing requirements. The majority of our climbing is done either close to the scenic Hartebeespoort Dam or a secret crag closer to town. Both venues are within an hour’s drive of Johannesburg.
First time rock climbing?
No worries. Our favorite thing is climbing. We will show you how. Our day tour includes lessons on basic rock climbing techniques and fun in an informal and safe environment.
What type of climbing is involved?
The climbing type is classified as ‘sport’ climbing and involves an instructor setting up a top rope which is secured to a permanent anchor point from above. Top-roping is the easiest and safest form of climbing. Once the rope has been set up, the instructor will make sure you are securely fastened into your climbing harness and you will climb while he ‘belays’ you from the bottom. The rope is basically attached to the instructors harness through a belay device which acts as an anchoring system as prevents a climber from falling. In fact, the rope is kept pretty taught as you climb that in the event of you letting go from the rock face, you will just dangle in midair.
How hard is the climbing?
Just like a Playstation, rock climbing is a progressive sport. Once we have determined your level of experience we will set up various routes that are attainable for you. But alas, rock climbing is also one of those sports where you walk away humbled and defeated every time. Part of the reason that keeps the rock climbing spark alive. There is always that nemesis of a route that needs to be conquered. Having said that, we will set up routes as you conquer them. Or yourself whichever comes first.
The mountains are our office and playground. Some of our guides have been climbing the crags around Johannesburg for over 10 years. They know each nook and cranny like the back of their hand. Their years of experience also give you that warm feeling that you are in good hands. Besides their commitment to professionalism and safety, the rock climbing guides have an absolute passion for what they do. What makes them happy is climbing and introducing travelers to their dynamic and focused world of rock, determination and accomplishment. There is a saying that it’s not how many mountains you have climbed but how many people you bring with you. From a professionalism and safety factor, all of our rock climbing guides ate certified as top rope supervisors through the Mountain Club of South Africa
How safe is it?
Rock climbing is considered one of the safest sports in the world. Probably due to the fact that not only is the equipment graded to handle huge Kilonewtons, but that it is a very conscious sport involving logic and safety checks. In fact, the most common injury while rock climbing is ‘climbers finger’ caused from too much climbing.
