Sodwana Bay is by far the SCUBA diving capital of South Africa!!!!

Nestled among the coastal dunes of the Isimangaliso Wetland Park on the northern side of St. Lucia, Sodwana is the perfect scuba diving vacation destination. The dive sites are recognized as the most Southerly reef systems in the world.

The area has been declared a marine reserve. Not only is Sodwana a perfect diving vacation hot spot it is also a perfect place to just unwind. Take a relaxing stroll along the deserted beaches edged by high forested dunes.  Or a romantic sunset horse ride along the beach.  This trip is a mixture of adventure, romance and intrigue, South African style!

The spectacular reefs that showcase some incredible hard and soft corals are also home to a myriad of tropical fish and host of larger pelagic species. The dramatic hard coral formations reveal an arena of overhangs and swim- through that are exploding with an abundance of colorful soft corals. Potato Bass, turtles and huge moray eels are common visitors to these reefs. If you are lucky a pod of dolphins or a whale shark may decide to join you on your dive vacation.

Best Scuba Dive Sites of Sodwana

The dive sites have been classified according to the distance from Jesser Point, the launching area for boats.  From quarter Mile to Nine Mile, these sites boast a variety of individual dive options.

The average depth of the dive sites are about 15m although several deeper dives are available for more experienced divers. The visibility on average is about 15m and sometimes up to 20m. The temperature ranges between 20 and 28 degrees Celsius, a perfect diving vacation.

The most popular and largest reef in Sodwana is Two mile reef. The reef extends in a Northerly direction for about 1.7km and is 900m wide. Because the reefs are in a bay there strong currents and surges are pretty rare.

Day 1

Travel day. Our scheduled tours leave from Johannesburg at 05H30. Your guide for the duration of the diving tour will meet you at your hotel. And then we load up the vehicle, bid the city a not so fond farewell and head south towards Sodwana.

The drive takes about 8 hours and we stop along the way for lunch. Upon arrival, we get you settled into your accommodation and you have a few hours free to recover from the drive down. Compulsory sunset beers or wine on the beach at 17H00. Oh and by the way, TV’s are banned.

We are going to take you to the most stunning secluded beach to watch the sun set over the ocean. And then its dinner, a bed time story and off to bed.

Day 2

The first dive of the day is done early in the morning. This is when the diving conditions are the best. The first dive is scheduled for 06H30. On the beach by 06H00. We will kit up and have a dive briefing before we head out to sea.

The boat ride out takes between 10 minutes and 30 minutes depending on what reef we decide to go to. The dive lasts about an hour. We then head on back to the launch site for a scrumptious breakfast. At 11H00 we have a second dive scheduled. After the dive, we head on back to the lodge where the afternoon is all yours.

At 15H30, we will take a drive through Lake Sibaya. An inland lake that is situated about 45 minutes away. The lake is home to Hippo, crocodiles and Fish Eagles. Back for dinner by about 19H00.

Day 3

If you are looking for the best scuba diving tour in South Africa then you have to plan a trip to Sodwana. This is definitely the best diving spot I have dived on in a long time. The crew and diving team from South Africa Adventures were outstanding, professional and passionate. The company is owner based so we got a more personalized service that made the tour so much more enjoyable, unique and interactive. I highly recommend this tour if scuba diving is your thing. They even have gear to rent so no need to travel with heavy dive gear
