Sterkfontein caves tour and walking with elephants

Half Day Elephant Walk And Sterkfontein Caves

Half day Elephant Walk and Sterkfontein Caves

If you are looking for a day tour that incorporates an incredible elephant interaction mixed with some anthropology and archaeology in the form of the famous Sterkfontein caves then this tour is a must.  Spend an hour walking and interacting with 3 semi-habituated elephants where you will be able to observe how these truly majestic animals live.

The elephants are not kept in cages. They are free roaming and basically go and do what they like. Sometimes they are chilled out and they are just content to spend a few minutes just stripping a tree or uprooting a root with their feet. Sometimes they have a bee in their bonnet and decide that they want to go on a walk about. Either way, we are there by their side. Getting up close and personal with the elephants will allow you to really connect with them.

The tour is a truly awesome sensory experience

You will hear the ‘rumbling’ noises as they talk to each other. You will smell the distinct elephant aroma (especially if you are standing to close to their rear ends). You will make eye contact and see sense a real sense of intelligence. Depending on their mood you will be able to feel their tough skin and ears. And if you are really up for it, a sloppy elephant kiss is always a nice way to say goodbye to your newly found elephant friend.

In terms of our policy on ethics and responsible tourism related to the welfare of animals, we are confident to say that these elephants are not mistreated in any way. In fact they have a whole game farm to themselves. They are not kept in cages like in a zoo.

The Sterkfontein caves are situated in the Cradle of Humankind and is home to the oldest human skull ever found.

The area has been classified as a World Heritage Site and it is no wonder when you get to walk into the caves and observe the incredible formations.

The hour long tour is accompanied by a guide who is an expert on the area and will take you through the history of the caves, archaeological facts and general knowledge of this ancient cave formation. The walk through the caves takes about an hour and although there are a few spots where you may need to bend down, the tour in itself is not hectic at all.

Day 1

Guests are picked up at 07H30 from any destination in Johannesburg or Pretoria. You will be met by your passionate day tour guide who will accompany you for the duration of the tour.

The first part of the tour involves the elephant walking. We drive from Johannesburg to the game reserve where the animals are situated. The drive takes about 1 hour. Upon arrival we will have a few minutes to enjoy some refreshments like coffee or tea and homemade muffins. At 09H30 we will be met by the resident elephant ranger who will take you on the tour.

Because the elephants are free roaming, you will be loaded into the Land rover and driven to where they have decided to be for the day. Sometimes they can be found high up in the mountains and sometimes they are closer to the lodge looking for water. Once we find them, you will get to spend an hour or so interacting with them. Sometimes they may decide to go on a walkabout so be prepared to go for a stroll with them. They can cover up to 2km in an hour. So make sure you have comfortable walking shoes.

After the elegant walk, we will take you through to the Cradle of Humankind where we will embark on an underground walking tour of the Sterkfontein Caves. The guide will take you on an incredible journey back in time. The oldest known human skeleton was recently found in these formations.

After the tour which should be finished by about 13H30, we will take you for lunch in a Cradle.

After lunch we take a leisurely drive back to Johannesburg. You will be back in your hotel by about 15H30.
