Half Day Elephant Walking Experience

Elephant Walking Safari with South Africa Adventures

Experience Overview: South Africa Adventures offers a unique and immersive elephant walking safari that allows you to interact closely with semi-habituated elephants in their natural environment. This experience is a blend of adventure, education, and intimate wildlife observation.

Location: The safari is conveniently located about a 1-hour drive from Johannesburg, making it an accessible day trip for both locals and tourists.

Duration: The safari typically lasts a few hours, providing ample time to engage with the elephants, observe their behavior, and learn about their lives.

Meet the Elephants

Elephants Featured:

  • Three: A gentle giant with a name derived from the container she was transported in as an orphan. Known for her long, lean legs and striking eyelashes, Three has a soft nature that quickly endears her to visitors.
  • Marty and Hannah: The other members of the trio who join Three in the safari. Each elephant brings its own unique personality and behaviors to the experience.

Activities:

  • Walking Side by Side: Experience the thrill of walking alongside these majestic animals through the African bush. This interaction provides a rare perspective on the elephants’ world.
  • Observing Daily Behaviors: Watch as the elephants engage in natural behaviors such as stripping branches, uprooting trees, digging for roots, and using sand and water for cooling off.
  • Educational Insights: While human guides are present to provide context and ensure safety, the focus is on the elephants. Learn about their behaviors, conservation needs, and the challenges they face in the wild.

Special Moments:

  • Elephant Kiss: One of the highlights of the safari is the affectionate “elephant kiss,” where the elephants give visitors a gentle touch with their trunks, creating a memorable and personal connection.

  • Pick up time is 8am from your hotel. You will be met by your guide who will be with you for the duration of your elephant walking day tour.
  • The drive through to the park takes about 1.5 hours and sees us heading towards the North Western province towards a private concession where the elephants reside.
  • Once we get there, we will have a cup of coffee and muffins before we pile you into one of the landrovers. The elephants could be roaming anywhere, so we need to find out from the rangers where they are and drive to them. Elephants weigh 6 tons. We are not going to argue with them about coming to us. We shall swallow our pride and drive to them.
  • Once we find them, we will spend about an hour walking, observing and interacting with them.
  • The walk is limited to 1 hour and is only done once a day. Limited to 8 people. We do not want to stress the elephants out with too much human interaction.
